Club meets are convened, on behalf of the Club, by members who volunteer to do so on an entirely non-commercial basis. Most of these members are not professional mountain guides, and any who are, act in their private capacities in this context. There should be no expectation that a professional guiding service is offered on Club meets. Mountaineering is an inherently risky activity. It takes place in mountain environments where there are objective dangers – such as friable rock and rapidly advancing inclement weather – that exist regardless of the presence of walkers or climbers. Managing and minimising exposure to such risks is an essential part of mountaineering, and the primary responsibility for doing so rests with the individuals engaging in mountaineering activities. A wide range of meets is offered - from relaxed, easy walks with lots of botanising, all the way through to adventurous scrambling on routes that few venture onto; from half and full-day hikes on the Cape Peninsula, to weekend and longer hiking trips in remote ranges of the Western Cape; from kloofing trips with boulder hopping and swimming in river pools in summer, to playing on snow-covered peaks in winter; from purely self-indulgent hikes, to satisfying outreach and conservation meets. Rock climbing The MCSA engages in all kinds of rock activities, including local and national bouldering and sport-climbing competitions and events, and 'trad' (traditional) climbing at all grades - from easy, to more demanding, multi-pitch country routes. Monthly rock climbing meets are arranged, as well as regular training and instruction meets. Apart from our own bouldering walls at our clubhouse, we also enjoy unlimited access to the bouldering walls at the University of Cape Town. The MCSA-CT section’s rock climbing sub-committee is involved with the following activities:
